Caring for your Editor

Editors can make you look like the greatest writer or drive you crazy.

• They decide if you get hired. Make them happy.
• They have more experience than you (usually). They can massage your writing and make you look brilliant. Learn from them,
• They are stressed out of their ever-loving minds. Accept a last-minute assignment. Write the article you think will be a bore. If you can make it interesting you'll be a better writer for it. They have the best interest of the publication at heart. Don't be married to each word you wrote. There is a reason keyboards have a delete key. Choose your battles. Unless their changes make the sentence factually incorrect, or keep you up at night, let it go.
• No one likes a whiner. Be easy to work with if you want repeat business.
• Read and follow the publication's writer's guidelines. Don't exceed word limits, Send submissions exactly as requested.
• Meet deadlines with emphasis on the word DEAD.
