Tips for Writing a Press Release

The goal is to get your event listed in the paper or to get a reporter to call you and write a story about what you care about.

Everyone knows that a well-written document, including a press release must answer the big W questions:

  • who
  • what
  • when
  • where
  • why
  • how

Yet I read press releases that neglect these details.

Savvy Public relations professionals know that the key to getting your story in the press is to answer the question "Why should I care?"

  • I should care that you are holding a fund-raiser because your group will cure cancer
  • I should care that your business is having a seminar because it is free and will help your reader's businesses grow.
  • I should care that your group stopped a bill at the state house because it would have devastated the environment.

Other tips:

Be concise. Pretend you are paying by the word. Editors are incredibly busy and appreciate reading items that are brief and to the point.

Write well. Get your facts straight and quote someone who has credibility. Use your best grammar and spell check.

Timing is everything. It may only be June but your back to school item might miss the magazine's September deadline. Go to their website and find submission due dates.
